Colon Hydrotherapy fact sheet

What is the colon?
The colon is the last part of the digestive tract. It is a hollow, tubelike organ about 3m long made up of muscle structure that moves digested food along by a wavelike motion known as peristaltic action. The colon is the living area for a host of bacteria that produce vitamins, such as K and some B vitamins. The colon also absorbs water, nutrients, proteins and cell salts back into the blood stream

Why Should you Concerned About your Colon?
The colon is the place where we store the waste material that most of us would rather not think about and most of us don't until our health becomes poor or we feel constipated or have diarrhea. It best benefits the body due to release of this accumulated congestion in the bowel.

What signs show inefficient elimination?
Some of the signs of a toxic colon are; coated tongue, fetid breath, shallow complexion, abnormal body odor, dark circles under the eyes, cold hands and feet, brittle nails and hair, sagging posture (pot belly), tension, fatigue, allergies, indigestion, chronic headaches, irritability, nervousness, nausea, depression, asthma, and backaches.

Can laxatives or enemas accomplish the same results?
To clean out the lower part of the colon, enemas are fine. But this will be missing about four feet of the colon. Laxatives are an irritant to the body.
Therefore, the body produces a thin, watery substance that goes through the colon and leaves behind impacted toxins and waste.

What makes a colonic so beneficial
In a 45 minute colon hydrotherapy session approximately 15 gallons of water is used to gently flush the colon. Through appropriate use of massage, pressure points, etc., the colonic therapist is able to work loose and eliminate far more toxic waste than any other short-term technique.

Can Colon Hydrotherapy improve the Bacteria balance in my body?
Probably in two ways (1) One way is to remove the toxins so the beneficial bacteria has a cleaner house to live in.
(2) The second way is to reintroduce the Lacto-bacilli
(Lactobacillus bifidus) that normally populates the colon. Most Colon Hydrotherapy Equipment has a means to reintroduce the Lactobacillus bifidus: Lactobacillus bifidus supplements are available at most Health Food Shop and some High Street chemist

How can we cleanse our colon?
One of the safest ways is a combination of diet, exercise, and Colon Hydrotherapy. It is the gentle infusion of filtered, temperature-controlled water, into the colon, by way of a sterile-disposable rectal tube or speculum. Water and faecal matter are flushed out.

How can this help?
The large intestine is a reflex organ, meaning there are bio-electrical connections to all other parts and systems of the body.
When waste material has accumulated over a long period of time it breaks down and becomes toxic. The body responds by slowing down other functions.
This causes constipation and sluggish bowel movements which affect all other systems of the body.

What will colonics do to the colon?
Specifically, a colonic is used to accomplish the following:

1) Cleanse the Colon:
Toxic material is broken down so it can no longer harm your body or inhibit assimilation and elimination.
Even debris built up over a long period is gently, but surely removed in the process of a series of treatments.
Once impacted material is removed, your colon can begin again to operate as it was intended to.
In this very real sense a colonic treatment is a rejuvenation treatment.

2) It Exercises the Colon Muscles:
The build up of toxic debris weakens the colon and impairs its functioning.
The gentle filling and emptying of the colon by hydrotherapy improves peristaltic (muscular contraction) activity by which the colon naturally moves material.

3) It Reshapes the Colon:
When problem conditions exist in the large intestine, they tend to alter its shape which in turn causes more problems.
The gentle action of the water, coupled with the massage techniques of the colon hydrotherapist helps to eliminate bulging pockets of waste and narrowed, spastic constrictions finally enabling the colon to resume its natural state.

4) It Stimulates Reflex Points:
Every system and organ of the body is connected to the colon by reflex points, colonic stimulates these points, affecting the corresponding body parts in a beneficial way.
How many colon hydrotherapy sessions are recommended?
If you have never had a colonic before, or if it has been a long time since you last had one, you will get the most out of it by doing a series of 2 to 3 colon hydrotherapy sessions. Depending on your individual situation and health goals, you may need only one or two colonic sessions. The reason for that is the human body is exceptionally smart. When we clean out the colon, the body starts pulling waste out of the tissue and putting them into the blood stream. The goal is to clean the whole colon. It is rare that this is achieved in a single hydrotherapy session. On the first colonic treatment, sometimes a lot of waste material comes out and sometimes not much at all. It just depends on several factors including your ability to relax, the condition of your health and colon, your diet and water intake and etc...

Is Colon Hydrotherapy painful?
Usually, painful experiences are the result of resistance and tension. A professional colon therapist is skilled at putting you at your ease and minimising discomfort. Most people actually enjoy the colonic and are especially pleased with the unaccustomed sensation of feeling lighter, clean and clear afterward. Sometimes during a colonic, the colon muscles will contract suddenly expelling considerable amounts of liquid and waste into the rectum. This may feel like cramping or gas, and may create a feeling of urgency to empty the rectum. Such episodes, if they do occur, are brief and easily tolerated.
Is it embarrassing to have a colonic?
No, you will fully maintain your personal dignity. You will be in a private room with only your therapist, who fully appreciates the sensitivity of the colonic procedure and will help you feel at ease. Your emotions will be acknowledged and respected. After the gentle insertion of a small tube into the rectum, you are completely covered. Rubber tubing carries clean water in and waste out in a gravity pressured system.

What should one do before a colonic treatment?
It maybe more comfortable to refrain from eating at least two hours before your scheduled colonic irrigation appointment. For best results, prepare a diet of vegetables and cereals

After a colonic irrigation, how might I expect to feel?
Most people remark on how clean & light they feel. "Like I just took a bath on the inside!" Increased energy and feelings of well-being are the common responses.

How much time is required for a Colon Hydrotherapy treatment?
The first session may take longer than the follow up colonic irrigation treatment. Plan about an hour and half for the first session. The actual time on most standard equipment is between thirty and forty-five minutes. After the first colonic, the body will know what to expect and become more relaxed.

What effects will Colon Hydrotherapy have on my skin, allergies & etc?
Our clients report that Colon Hydrotherapy has cleared up acne, allergies, as well as asthma. They also tell us about the increase in energy, and how calm they feel. Colonic cleansing is not cure, but valuable procedure for a wide variety of many health problems. By improving elimination, we remove the number one source of disease in the body. In addition, we open up the bowel to a more efficient means of waste elimination and nutrient absorption, both of which are essential to any lasting healing process. This is also the first step towards normalising the bowel so that the friendly bacteria will return to keep the colon safe from putrefaction and any further autointoxication.

Will it be okay to eat after having a colonic? We suggest that you eat at your normal meal time, and consume a moderate amount of whatever seems gentle and nourishing to you. Just as it doesn't make sense to have you car cleaned and then immediately drive it through mud, eating a meal known to cause trouble in your abdomen directly after a colonic cleansing isn't an intelligent choice. Salads, vegetable soups or broths, fruit, or juices are the best choice.

Will one colonic completely empty the colon?
Almost never. Firstly, many of us have a considerable amount of impacted faeces in our large intestine. This is hardened, rubbery or wallpaper like material. Substantial work must be done to remove it. Secondly, there is a subtle learning process involved in receiving colonics. As you become more aware of what is going on in your abdomen, and as your body learns how to allow the cleansing experience, you are better able to enter into that process, and therefore more material is released. One colonic cleansing will remove some of the stagnant waste in the colon. The second and subsequent colonics will remove more. How many you may wish to have will depend upon your personal objectives.

Will a colonic make me constipated or give me diarrhoea?
The most frequent post-colonic experience is to have a slight delay in bowel movements and then a resumption of a somewhat larger, easier to move stool. Sometimes if the colon is weak and sluggish, there may be no bowel movement for several days following a colonic. However this is not due to the colonic irrigation, but rather to the weakness of the large intestine, and should be interpreted as an indication that the colon requires strengthening and healing. Very infrequently diarrhoea or loose bowels may be experienced. This could be due to the extra water introduced into the colon or to the stirring up of toxic waste. If this should occur, it is usually of very short duration. However, since severe diarrhoea dehydrates the body, it must be carefully monitored.
